What is a Child Contact Centre? The Hamilton Child Contact Centre plays a key role in helping children affected by family breakdown to maintain a relationship or, in some cases, begin new ones with the parent they do not live with. We offer a safe, friendly, neutral, child-centred environment that puts the needs of the children first.
What is the setting like? We operate from a flat at St. Mary’s Scottish Episcopal Church. The facilities in the flat provide a more homely, comfortable setting, for a small number of families. Each family has use of a separate lounge area. The most important people in the Child Contact Centre are the children. We aim to create a warm, sociable atmosphere where parents and children can relax and enjoy themselves.
Who runs the Contact Centre? We are run by a management committee, a Contact Centre Manager and a team of committed volunteers. Our staff and volunteers are trained and follow guidelines set down by ‘Relationships Scotland’. We have gained a Quality Assurance Award from ‘Relationships Scotland’. Our volunteers have also gained a Quality Standard Award from South Lanarkshire Volunteer Services.
What type of contact is offered? We offer supported contact and we also facilitate ‘pick up’ and ‘drop off’ for any child/ren having out-of-centre contact. Staff support the hand-over of the child/ren from one parent to the other.
How do people get to use the Contact Centre? We accept referrals from Solicitors, Social Services, Schools and other referral agencies. We do not accept self referrals.
When is the Centre open? The Contact Centre operates on Saturdays from 10.00am to 4.30pm. We can be contacted at this time or during office hours, Monday to Friday. How do I make an application? Initial applications for a place at the Centre should be made by enquiry to our Contact Centre Manager. A referral form will be issued, or can be downloaded; so that we have details of all persons who may be attending. We charge a one-off referral fee to help with the overall costs of keeping the Centre open.
